Seven miles outside of Sheffield, lies the Derbyshire village of Grindleford. It inhabits the Hope Valley, which runs through to the Chatsworth Estate, and sits beside the River Derwent in the Peak District National Park. The west side of the valley is the 429 metre high Sir William Hill, and to the south-east lies the gritstone escarpment of Froggatt Edge. The parish of Grindleford now combines the old parishes of Eyam Woodlands, Stoke, Nether Padley and Upper Padley.

The village is very popular with walkers and climbers due to its proximity to a variety of beautiful landscapes, including open moorland, wooded river valleys (including an easy flat walk through from Hathersage to Calver and Padley Gorge), several gritstone escarpments, and the Hope Valley. anyone  seeking refreshment are well catered for by a number of establishments, including the Sir William Hotel, the Maynard Hotel and Bar, the National Trust Longshaw Estate Visitor Centre, and the quirky Grindleford Station Cafe which inhabits the old station house.

A short walk from the station is Padley Hall (or Padley Manor) which is where, in 1588 duriing the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, two Catholic priests (Nicholas Garlick and Robert Ludlum) were discovered and then, two weeks later, hung, drawn and quartered in Derby, because of their faith. They became known as the 'Padley Martyrs'. Padley Hall today is a virtual in ruin, although part of it -probably originally the central gatehouse range- still survives. In 1933 this was converted to a Roman Catholic chapel in honour of the martyrs and it is now visited by a pilgrimage every year, in July.
